Abstract: The GIS Certification Institute is an organization of organizations that serve gis professionals in various capacities. Some 20 years ago, it instituted the formal GISP certification, which was back then solely based on one’s GIS portfolio. They added in 2015 an exam similar to that for professional engineers. Now, in 2025, GISCI introduced another exam for students to get them on their path towards the GISP. Immediate past-president of the GISCI, Dr. Jochen Albrecht, is going to present the benefits of beckoning a GISP and walk you through the certification process.

Bio: Dr. Albrecht is a professor for Theoretical and Computational Geography at Hunter College, CUNY. He has served on the boards of numerous professional GIS organizations and sees it as his mission to bridge the divide between academia and the world of GIS professionals. He was awarded the UCGIS Educator of the Year prize in 2018 and served for many years as the editor of the URISA Journal.
