On Sat. Oct. 1 from 2pm-4pm, as part of the NSF UNUM project, we will be unveiling the Underground Periscope and an utilities-based scavenger hunt at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (see below) as part of a larger community outreach event (see schedule below). As a project partner or Sunset Park community organization, GISMO, along with GINKGO, NYU, and CPC, will have a table at the event.
We are excited that as part of the UNUM project, artist Emilie Clark has created a sculptural film installation “Underground Periscope” that explores the urban underground as a living organism with its own systems, made up of many interconnected and interdependent parts. The sculpture is made from a repurposed concrete catch basin and has a multi-channel projection of a film the artist shot with an endoscopic camera. In viewing the transformed catch basin (something intended for the underground) the visitor will contemplate what lies beneath—intentional excavation, transportation, rock, soil, anthropogenic deposits, human artifacts, vermin, sewage, water, utilities and much more.
